Gift Ideas

Use a toy box, basket or even a large dog food bowl to create a gift basket of other gift items.

Get the new puppy and parent off to a great start with thoughtful gifts.

There are lots of toys, blankets and treats for puppies, and more introduced each year.

There are some things that dog owners like to purchase themselves, like collars and crates. Other things - such as bowls - are needed right away, and might be already taken care of once the puppy comes home.

But there are plenty of things that you can purchase for the new arrival that the new owner probably has not purchased yet.

  • Interactive to help keep puppy occupied during alone-time. These reduce separation anxiety. A good one is the crate mobile (right), with replaceable toys. A sturdier one for larger pups is the Canine Genius Leo Interactive Toy. Put treats in and link them together. Treats go from toy to toy as puppy plays with it. Provides mental stimulation and fights boredom.

  • Soft plush toys to give puppy something to work on while mom's home. These can be unbelievably cute.

  • A scrapbook or photo album for many memories to come. You might even include a disposable camera, so that pictures from the shower can be included.

  • Leash and pickup bags for housebreaking and walks (most pet owners prefer to select their own collars)

  • Treats appropriate for puppies: easy-to-digest, small, soft treats. These are good for training and to help the puppy associate his new surroundings with good things.

  • A soft blanket for the puppy's crate or bed, or Cratewear to turn the crate into a cozy den.

  • A gentle shampoo with a soft scent that doesn't overpower sensitive little noses. Add a rubber duck just for fun, and a splash-free towel for mom.

  • A gift certificate to a training class or grooming salon.

  • A map and directions to the closest dog park, along with a printout of the rules & regulations, a small hand towel for muddy feet, and a fetch toy. Put it all in a collapsible water bowl and you've got a fine basket filled with fun for years to come.

  • A little jacket or hoodie. FunStuffForDogs.com has adorable puppy hoodies with matching toys.

Gift Idea: Purchase a small autograph book. On each page, ask a guest to write a piece of advice or observation about dogs. Give the book to the new dog owner at the party.
