Pet Safety for Halloween

Signs of Chocolate Poisoning

Chocolate contains theobromine, a dangerous stimulant that can cause seizures, cardiac failure and death in dogs. Signs of chocolate poisoning are:

Excessive drooling
Excessive urination
Pupil dilation
Rapid heartbeat
Vomiting and diarrhea
Hyperactivity
Muscle tremors/seizures
Coma

If your dog ingests chocolate (regular or dark) and exhibits any of these signs, go to paw-rescue.org  to learn what to do.

To help pets enjoy Halloween, throw a pet party during the day or on a day other than the 31st so that activities and treats can be customized for the dogs.

Keep dogs away from jack-o-lanterns, candles and other fire hazards.

Should Dogs go Trick-or-Treating?

It's best to leave dogs at home while your kids go trick-or-treating. Dogs can become stressed with all the new and strange sights and sounds. Even if your dog and your kids are happy and well-behaved while trick-or-treating, and you have an adult or older child go along whose sole job is to manage the dog, you cannot control the pranks of others while your dog is going door to door. Also, there's often candy, wrappers, fireworks and eggs on the ground that are tempting to dogs and may be ingested without anyone noticing. It's just better to leave the dog at home.

What's the Best Place for Fido?

Dogs left unattended in back yards sometimes fall victim to pranksters or forgetful kids who may enter yards and leave gates open. Supervise your dog during Halloween festivities, and if she doesn't cope well with all the commotion, give her a quiet room and something to do. Many dog parents even crate their dogs (if their dogs are used to a crate) to give them an added sense of security.

What Foods are Dangerous for Dogs? Chocolate and sugar, along with other candy ingredients, are harmful or fatal to dogs. Purchase treats for the dogs and don't let them share the candy.

TIP: "Gizmo, our Rat Terrier, barks when people come to the door. Halloween is a challenge for him. Last year, we put a leash on him and hooked the handle over a doorknob in a place where he could see the front door, but not reach the visitors. We have a LOT of trick-or-treaters in our neighborhood, and after a while, he just lay down. He'd look up when the doorbell rang, but by the end of the night, he didn't even get up." S.
